SABO Welcomes CEBISA as PCO for 35th ISB

CEBISA's objective is to provide SABO with a professional conference, meeting, event and destination management and organising solution whether for hybrid, virtual and or face to face, maximising on our experience, resources and technological capabilities; whilst minimising costs, communications and confusion. CEBISA's one stop service allows SABO to streamline processes, reduce challenges and ensure the success for the 35th ISB event. As Professional Conference Organisers (PCO), CEBISA organise association and corporate hybrid, virtual and face to face conferences, meetings, incentives and other related events. CEBISA manages the administration and operational processes for SABO as SABO's Professional Conference Organisers (PCO) leaving SABO free to attend to the business content of the conference or even

SABO Best Poster Award for ISB

The South African Ballistics Organisation (SABO) Award gives recognition to the author(s) of the best poster as displayed and presented at the International Symposium on Ballistics. This award was instituted at the 25th Symposium in Beijing for the first time. The aim of this award is to inspire poster presenters to present their work in creative, legible and professional fashion in order to make the poster sessions special exchange of information events at the symposiums. The SABO award is a statue of the Zulu warrior Shaka, king of the Zulu nation. Shaka revolutionized the old techniques of warfare in Southern Africa. He observed that hurling the light throwing assegai at a distant enemy was mostly ineffective and was equivalent to throwing one’s weapon away. He developed the short, stout, stabbing assegai, especially designed for close combat. He converted the shield for use as an offensive weapon by lengthening the shield and using it to hook the shield of his opponent away, thus providing an opening to use the stabbing assegai. Additionally the use of sandals, which caused the wearer to slip more easily on the battlefield, was prohibited. Bare feet properly toughened through harsh preparation provided greater agility and mobility. Due to these fighting techniques, he and his warriors conquered and dominated South-Eastern Africa during his reign from 1818 to 1827.

SABO Workshop 2025 merging with 35th ISB preparations

Dear members please note that there shall not be a SABO Workshop 2025. The members are encouraged instead to submit abstracts for the upcoming 35th ISB to be held during 18th to 23rd October 2026 at the Cape Town ICC. These abstracts are to be in the format required for the ISB and the format will be communicated shortly. Those members that require a dry run before the 35th ISB are welcome to contact info@sabo.co.za and an online session shall be arranged. The first call for submission of abstracts shall be sent out during October 2025. SABO is looking forward to your submissions.

Best Presentation Award SABO Symposium 2023, CSIR ICC 9 -11 May 2023

Congrats on Best Oral Presentation Gold Award going to Lafras Fritz et al for "Evaluation of Weapon Dynamics and Weapon Mount Dynamic Response", "The evaluation and measurement of the dynamic response of weapon systems is a continual challenge. The measurements of interest are usually estimated using accelerometers, or laser-based displacement sensors. The sensors used must have adequate full-scale range to ensure limits are not exceeded, as well as sufficient dynamic range to ensure the internal resonance frequency is not activated. The typical shock- loadings experienced during weapon firings are of a small-time scale. Very often, the entities-of-interest are not accelerations, but rather displacements and velocities. The computing of these quantities by numerical integration also poses some risks. The frequency response of the signal, the integration strategy, and the initial conditions are often responsible for the incorrect integration results. Added inconveniences are that accelerometers can sometimes not be placed at the location of interest (due to thermal constraints or inaccessibility of cabling), and that multiple uniaxial accelerometers, or another triaxial accelerometer) would be required for every location of interest. Flamengro has developed an algorithm to utilise Computer Vision (CV) to obtain full-field displacements of a tracked object, or “marker”. The algorithm determines the position of a marker in the image, and the displacements are calculated from the positions. The velocities and accelerations are determined by numerical differentiation instead. "

34th ISB Best Poster Certificate Gold

The Effect of the Microstructure on the efficiency of shaped charges obtained via powder metallurgy. Poster presentation by Martyna Strag et al "Shaped charges are used in explosive applications to direct energy of an explosion, creating a high-velocity jet capable of penetrating materials such as steel and concrete, which makes them valuable in military contexts. These charges, typically made from copper alloys or metal powder sinters, required optimization to enhance their penetration capabilities. This study investigates the microstructure of shaped charges manufactured through powder metallurgy using tungsten and copper powders. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were employed to analyze grain size, elemental distribution, and composition. The results confirmed the effectiveness of the preparation procedure for shaped charges and provide a foundation for future work."
